It was awful. Since having Dylan in November, this was by far our worst night EVER. The procedure to "clean" Dylan out, was horrible. It was hard for him as it made him cramp up, and so forth. We were up with him all night long helping him along....we will spare you the details. (Keep in mind, that Dylan was not allowed to eat since Wednesday night at bedtime; making things even more crazy for everyone!)

On Friday, at 6am, the MUSC surgery team started to give Dylan a look-see. They weren't so sure that anything could happen - due to the "clean out", it left Dylan quite distended, and "too full" to even think of having a full procedure. Adam and I were scared. Were we going to only be able to do 1/2 of the surgery? Could we do all of it? So many questions.... way too many questions. To make a very long story short, Dr. Hebra spoke with Adam and I at 8:00am, and told us that he will do a step-by-step process, and go as far as he could go on Dylan.

The anesthesia team wheeled Dylan back to the operating room around 8:30am, and when they took Dylan, I lost it. Totally. Totally lost it. Dylan was being wheeled away in his baby crib, crying, and saying "mamamamamamama". Nothing can numb that. Nothing. Argh.

Time passed so slowly. Thanks to my mom - she brought along some arts and crafts for me to keep my hands occupied. During our time in the waiting room, we had a lot of great visitors, text messages, emails, phone calls, and people all over on their way up to see us.... that helped. Greatly.

Hour-by-hour we kept getting updates from the surgery team....things were progressing, and they were looking good. Dylan was operated on first by laproscopic surgery, then by a robot - the DaVinci, then sealed up the ostomy laproscopicaly. It's amazing what modern medicine and a talented surgeon team can do! Dr. Hebra is one of the very few, and world reknowned, surgeons that can operate the DaVinci. This is great for Dylan b/c the tools are tiny, and can do great surgeries on babies. They removed 10 -12 inches of "bad" intestine, and then sewed Dylan up.

Finally....we got to see Dylan at 2:00pm. What a long wait. Baby boy was sleeping so heavily, but were with him the entire time. And, what a shock it was for us to see a child without an ostomy! That was all we knew! He had the most minute stitches for such significant surgery. We are so grateful.

At that point, Adam and I were elated, grateful, and felt that our prayers were answered. It was a long 10 months, that was for sure - to even see if we could do the surgery, then to the entire pre-op fiasco, to a long surgery.

The next few days were spent on 8D (infant and toddler ward) at MUSC, and one of slept there and stayed beside him at all times. Mama and Daddy Walker, and Nana Wasdin were great supporters, as well as Aj, and all of our friends in Charleston, and Hilton Head that came and visited our room with Dylan, and gave us so much CHEER. Thank you.

It was also my birthday (3-1) while in the hospital, and this whole time all I asked for for my big day was a poopy diaper...well, I got 'em! Lots of 'em, and they keep on coming!! :)

We came home on Tuesday by noon, and have been sleeping, resting, and recovering from this rollercoaster. My mom is here and keeping Dylan while Adam and I return to work (to pay for those medical bills), and Dylan and she are spending lots of quality time together. Dylan is up and playing, crawling, creeping, reaching, and almost walking already! He's eating well, and doing everything that he needs to be doing. We are proud parents!

Thank you to all who have continuously supported us. We have had great meals, letters, cards, gifts, visitors, and COMPANY. Thank you.

We love you all. Please keep our little man in your thoughts and prayers. Yes, the big surgery is over, but we want him to keep on "performing", growing, and developing.

Thanks again. Love, Kristyn :)

....we have a date! It will be the BEST-EST b-day gift that a gal could ask for. We are optimistic, and are really starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Already, we have the "grandmas" waiting in the wings to come and help us! What a tough morning beginning at 4:30am. Dylan woke up (early!) this morning, and to console him we gave him doc's appvd apple juice before his procedure today. We could only give him 5 oz, so that had to last for the long haul this morning. Thankfully, it nearly did the trick!

We arrived at MUSC today at 7am to surgery check-in. The nurses were all so sweet, and super baby-friendly, and saw the surgeon. And, in case you are wondering, Dylan weighs 21lbs, and 15oz. BIG DUDE! This is such a good thing, and Dylan needs to be a big boy to endure these tests.

The MUSC team performed a rectal examination, dilation, and biopsy to find out if he still had the stinosis (closure) of the rectum, as well to find out what is causing the stinosis, and to see if he has Herschsprung's Disease (nerve damage).

Dr. H said he did great during the biopsy and procedure (took 40 mins), but found a very significant amount of stinosis (surprising amounts, actually) towards the "exit". That is the place where he took the biopsy sample for pathology to test for Herschsprung's. The results will be back in one week's time.

Dylan woke up to his mommy and daddy, and had lots of sugar water to make sure he wouldn't get sick from any bottle fed food, or spoon fed food. That, of course, he took with great pleasure. He loves to eat! We got home, and he and Adam slept like logs....

We feel......at first, very sad and heartbroken. We wanted to know that the stinosis has disappeared. But, now, after taking a moment, some light is creeping into the darkness. Adam and I will keep hoping, praying, and believing that our little tank will be just fine soon enough.

The next step? Ostomy reversal surgery at the end of August/early September. Dylan did great.... Adam and I did well, but it definitely left a scar on us, too! Argh. To see your child cry while you help hold them down.... not so fun. But, I'll take it if that's what makes this whole thing better.

After about one hour of tests, we were dismissed from MUSC and told that the Dr. would give us a ring once he read and cross-referenced the reports.

Adam spoke with the doc this evening, and things look surprisingly well! Prayers do work! According to the surgeon, and his amazement, the stinosis looks as if it has been cleared up. (I know, I'm speechless too) So.... to be absolutely certain we know what we are looking at, they will be scheduling a biopsy next. The biopsy will be an outpatient procedure, but Dylan will be asleep and they can take a long look in there to see the specifics before they do the "pull-through" of the intestine/reversal. While they are taking a look-see, they will also test for Hershsprung's Disease (sp?). Originally when they tested for that disease back in November, it came out negative, but the doc is super thorough, so he still wants to be 100% certain.

I am delighted and amazed with what was found today! Unbelieveable! NO more stinosis?! I think that's why the biopsy --- the doc can't believe it either (ha ha!).

Oooh, I need to process everything, and start getting ready for round #2.

I will update everyone on the biopsy date, results, and then surgery.

Much love and many thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers. The nurses gave us some new cream to try, so we were good in that department....they are all so nice.

While we were there, Dr. Hebra (surgeon), wanted to visit with us. He took one look at Dylan's size (21lbs, 9oz), and determined that it is time to get the ball rolling with the next step!!!!! What a nice surprise today! There is a LOT to come, of course, but it's a starting point earlier than we had originally determined (Fall) due to his "BEAST-ness" of a size. Dr. Hebra indicated that Dylan is now large enough to able to withstand the tests, as well as surgery.

Our first pre-op surgery appt. will be on Wednesday, June 15th at 9:45am. At that appt., we will be meeting with the MUSC Radiology team so that they can investigate Dylan's lower bowels. They will take some pictures and give Dr. Hebra a "new map" of what the surgery team will be working with, as Dylan's body has changed dramatcially since November '08. After the pictures are reviewed, Dr. Hebra will then allow us to know within 24-48 hours after the radiology appt, if Dylan is a good candidate for the reversal surgery, or if we need to look at other options.

Let's all hope that he's an AMAZING candidate for surgery, and that the "map" of Dylan's lower half will show great things.....

Have a great day everyone.Love, kwb

Dylan will be 7 mos. on Sunday (...and an update on his surgery)!

How cute is this lil' tank getting?!?!?! :) Ahhh... we love him more each day (is that possible?!). Dylan will be seven months old this coming Sunday; it's amazing how quickly time flies!

Adam and I are doing really well in both being working parents, and getting into a great routine. He loves nursery school, especially the ladies in his class! As far as growth and development.... 75th% in size - he's a BIG dude! He's rolling over all of the time, schooching across the floor, grabbing everything (it always ends up in his mouth), and laughing ALL of the time! Dylan's amazing!

As far as a surgery update.... our next appointment at the surgeon's office will be on September 9, 2009, at 7:40am. Adam and I both look forward to what that visit will bring - we are going to learn the date of his reversal surgery and the details that come with it (we are anticipating Dylan being at the Children's Hospital from 7-10 days this coming Fall). The success rate is very high, so we're hoping for great things! It will break our hearts, and also be quite exhausting, to see Dylan in the hospital. It will be very diff't this time, as we are so used to having him around all of the time, and he really knows us. So..... ahhh.... pray for good things.

We hope everyone is doing great!

Love, kwb

Dylan is 6 mos. old!

I can't believe our baby boy is 6 mos. old! Ball of nerves - oh yes, I am!

The plan is for Dylan to go in on Day 1 to MUSC (Medical University of SC) to be prepped for surgery and "cleaned out", then on Day 2 have the surgery, then recover on days 3 -10.

Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers as we prepare for this journey that we will be taking on in the Fall of '09.

Love, kristyn

Dylan Rolls Over on Saturday

BIG CHAMP!

Dylan feeds himself this morning!

Well, he put on quite a show for his Great Grandparents this morning by feeding himself! He's contagious. He is also ALL boy! Dylan loves to wrestle, be thrown, and play.... ahhh, this is the fun stuff!

We started food, as we're at 18lbs! Can you believe it?! 18 lbs already! He's tried sweet potatoes, bananas, and peaches. So far - sweet 'taters are the best. He loves them so much he wears them! Dylan is about to roll over - he's close, very very close. And, sitting up with little assistance. I'm such a proud mama!

As for the surgery, reversal that is, we spoke with the surgeon's office last week, and it could be as early as September. More to come! We will anticipate being at MUSC PICU for about 7-10 days.... not looking forward to that ride again.... but, we will be there for our baby boy! We already have Ninah and Nana signed up to take care of him post-op when Adam and I have to return to work. Thank goodness for them!

Recently, we went to Hilton Head and had a great great time! Dylan liked the feel of the sand, and he definitely hammed it up while we were there! For Easter, we were in Florida to see his Nana, Auntie Kaleigh, Pa Jerry, and Great Grandpa and Great Grandma. We all had a wonderful time! And, yes, the Easter Bunn(ies) came for Dylan! Thank you to you all.

We wish everyone well and have a happy spring!

This is a picture taken on the beach in HHI!

Such a Cutie!

Here's our main man.... 16lbs and 12 oz of him.... what a doll! :)

Survival

....of being a working mom! Adam, Dylan and I are all adjusting, and we're surviving. Thank goodness. We're finding a routine (I find solitude in routines), and our new schedules. I have never appreciated family time so much in all my life. It's fun, and I live for the weekends!

I have to admit, I do enjoy being back at work a great deal. It's peaceful, actually! I'm sure a lot of you are like, "WHAT?!"...but, I find work to be a great escape from colostomy stuff (even though we're used to it), and the worries of what the future may bring for his reversal surgery (the what if's would eat me up alive if I let 'em). It's a welcome distraction. I hope that doesn't mean I no longer qualify for Mom of the Year. I only mean that I like doing both. It's working. Though, I will also admit, I miss that lil' man with all my heart in the hours I'm away from him....

He's 14.5 weeks already - where on earth has time gone?! He's growing up so quickly. I'm proud of him, and proud of his Daddy and I. We've come a long way, baby. And, tribute to the Grateful Dead, what a "Long strange trip it has been". I feel older, wiser, and not so naive.

I ask all of you to pray and continue your positive thinking - it DOES work - Dylan will be having surgery again in the fall, and I'm already looking for strength for that one.

Much love, kwb

Back at it....

Hi All:

This coming week (starting on Monday) will be my first week back to work; I went back on Friday, but then had the weekend, so that was a great way to start! But, it will also be a new week of routines, daycare (at our church with loving women - so happy that he got in there), and schedules for Adam and I... I am sure it will bring it's own set of challenges, but we're up for it. If we can survive MUSC, we can survive this! Many thousands of women and men do it everyday. I just know that I will miss him dearly. Once that 5pm whistle blows, I'm outta there! However, I do have to admit, that I am also very lucky to be gainfully employed, and still love my job (anyone need to book a meeting, by the way?!)!

We had a nice, relaxing weekend at home and enjoying a lot of family time. Our friends had us over for a dinner party on Friday evening, and we did some hanging out with the neighbors in this great warm weather that we are having! Life is so good!

Many of you have asked me about Dylan's next surgery. Adam and I will have an appt. with the MUSC Ped's Surgery team in September, and they will then schedule the surgery for the Fall. I pray each and everyday that we will be able to watch Dylan heal successfully, and that Adam and I can bear and beat the anxiety which will slam us into the wall again this fall. I promise to keep you posted.

We wish you a great week!

Enjoy this picture of Dylan - 12 weeks old! :) Time is flying....

What's been going on.....

We just returned from a great trip to OHIO to see Ninah and Papa (Kristyn's parents)... it was perfect! It even snowed for us while we were up there...

I'm enjoying the last week of maternity leave before I head back to work next Friday. I'm very bittersweet about it. Part of me is really sad to go back and leave Dylan, while the other part of me is very excited to go back to work and use the other side of my brain. Why is it that women have a tough job? I want my cake and eat it too..... not too proud to admit that.

I hope everyone is well.

Here's another picture of our lovebug. I am loving being at home with Dylan, and anticipating getting back to work in February (I'm so torn...want to be a mommy and want to be a worker-bee! I love my kid sooo much, and I love my job too --- maybe I'm lucky!).

Over the weekend, we went to Hilton Head so that we could share Dylan with our friends --- oh, we miss you all so much. The Lindstedt's threw a great dinner party and were spectacular hosts and hostesses. Thank you. To all of you that came - meant the world to us, and we had a great time catching up with you.

Scott, Suzy's brother in law took baby photos of all the babies and I can't wait to see the finished results. He's a great photographer, so as soon as I have the 4 babies together, I will post a few if I am allowed to do so from Scott. I don't know what was more funny - the babies screaming and crying or us crazy mom's and aunties!

So, this months drama (since I can't seem to shake it the past few mos): I've been scrambling to find a new daycare for Dylan, as our last person had a better offer. Talk about short notice....3 weeks! Was I upset? OH MY --- couldn't sleep for days! Daycare in Charleston no matter where you look as at least a 9 - 12 mos. waiting list. But, due to our situation, and Dylan needing care, people are very kind and sensitive. We are very lucky. That's just our luck this time around, but it seems like we have a few great options, and he'll be taken care of. I wish I could leave him under my desk all day, but I don't think Dylan would like sitting still all day, and I know my boss wouldn't like it too much either! :) So, I am having some anxiety about taking him anywhere other than at home with me, his daddy or a grandparent....that's normal, yes?!

We had our 2 mos. docs appt. today. Dr. Hebra shared the reversal news with his pediatrician, and they are monitoring Dylan's weight closely. Dylan is at 13lbs, 11oz, and 23 inches long. He's in the 95% for weight, and 50% for height. Adam had me cracking up today.... he said our little man is short and fat... LIKE A BULLDOG. HA HA HA! Ahhh, we love him so much and these things make us laugh.

Dylan also had his shots today - he did great. Shots for that kid are a breeze after everything he's been through so far. Braver than his mommy that's for sure. He did well, and then I fed him afterwards - his reward to get even fatter!

This weekend, we have his Nana (adam's mama) and Kaleigh (adam's sis) coming from FL. I'm sure there will be enough sugars (kisses) for Dylan to just drown him! We can't wait to see them.

Then, the next weekend, we are going to brave a LONG road trip to see my folks in Cinci. We will go primarily so that PAPA (my dad) can have some Dylan time for his birthday present. I haven't posted in a while, so decided that I would take this opportunity to reach out to you and keep in touch.

This Christmas has brought a few new exciting things, and some turns to us.... First of all, we are so enthused to have him home, it's been wonderful! I have been enjoying being a new mama, but have also found a whole new stress level of being a new mama. Who knew?! Actually, those of you who know me VERY well know that I can be somewhat high strung at times..... :) oops, I am human.

We had a great Holiday with Adam's family in Florida. He got to meet the entire side of Adam's Mom's family (how great!) .... they just gave our little man so many cuddles, it was ridiculous (in a good way!). I loved it. We also got the opportunity to visit with Adam's Dad at the River Home, and had a great time there. The best part, though, was introducing Dylan to Adam's brother and sister-in-law..... Dylan hammed it up for them! Adam and I came home on Christmas Day to be with my family here in Charleston. Dylan got a wagon, even more cuddles, and just super spoiled by Santa!

Adam and I also got to take some time for a valuable date; 2 dates actually, as we've had some great babysitters (Grandma's - thank you!)! We were not at all nervous and enjoyed ourselves for the few hours that we were out.

As for the "hard stuff".... well, we are still learning how to do the "new parent stuff". Dylan had the sniffles the other day, and like most Mom's (I imagine) totally lost my cool, and thought that Dylan had the worst cold and that he needed to see a doc ASAP. However, my problem (if you would call it that) is that I automatically go back to thinking that SNIFFLES = NICU at MUSC. I can't handle that. But, Dylan turned out that he just had some congestion, and I had "NMA" - new mom anxiety! :) I must work on that. I need work in that area. I seem strong on the outside to most people, but if you really take a good look, you can see I am walking on eggshells. Every cry, every noise, etc, makes me think that he could go back to the NICU. So, I am working on that. I am really trying hard. Does it ever get any easier for those of you who have been in the NICU?! I really need to know the answer to that question.... or, does your mind ALWAYS go there? Like, you have your child at home with you, but it's only temporary until the next bad thing happens?! I hate it. I hate thinking like that....as I said, I am trying to change and work on that.

If anyone told me before I got pregnant that I would know the outcome of Dylan's entrance into this world, I would have appreciated that. REALLY. I would not change a thing, however, I think that I would have been more prepared. Mentally, emotionally, financially, spiritually, and so forth. The list goes on. I KNOW that Dylan is healthy and that he's going to be a well-functioning member of society, but still - sometimes I think that "... if I only did this (fill in the blank)". I did EVERYTHING RIGHT (so I thought) when I was pregnant - no sushi, no deli meat, no alcohol, no drugs, no dancing on bars/poles (hee hee). I exercised, hired a personal trainer, and got adequate amounts of sleep. WHY? I ask myself every single day, and do not know the answer with great amounts of frustration. And, every single day I quote the mantra, "Special Children require Special Parents". MUSC teaches you that, and I think that is a perfect saying.

We really have walked away with a blessing, haven't we?! Sometime in my life, I would like to volunteer and be an advocate for children with special needs --- Maybe work at the Ronald McDonald House and be their event planner/reservationist person (put my Hotel experience to use), and make parents' stays less stressful. I am not sure - but be aware that this whole experience has changed me, and I would like to HELP others.

For 2009, Adam and I would like a very calm year with no major events other than watching Dylan recover from his reversal... just live and enjoy and be Dylan's parents.

I am done writing now.... just had to ramble... sorry!

MERRY CHRISTMAS WISHES TO YOU!

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5281231313004012226" style="DISPLAY: block; And, they were worried about him not eating! We are definitely doing well in that respect.

In meeting with the surgeon today, we were told that the surgery will be reversible in Fall 2009 before he is 1 year old --- Dylan has what is called "anal stinosis"(a blockage right before the anal canal that is too small to have anything push through). However, with the biopsy results and a good look at him, everything else is completely healthy and tissues are alive and well - what a great thing! In the Fall, when he's bigger so that his body can sustain the surgery, the surgeons will remove the blockage, and pull down the more developed tissue/intestine so that Dylan can function as "normal".

This is all so wonderful! Of course, we still have to have the surgery, and go through all of that, but things are looking good, and the ostomy will not be permanent should the reversal be successful (docs are optimistic).... we are so glad for Dylan - I'd do anything for that little man.... ANYTHING to make him better.

Thank you all for everything....

love, "mama" kwb ;)

Dylan Loves Bob (Marley that is...)

Thought I'd share this one with you.... our lil' rock star be jammin'!

We're having a good time.... enjoying being home with Dylan, and watching him GROW! Your visits were priceless. Thank you so much for repairing me - it was great to see you all, and to have your company (via phone or in person). Your support and encouragement has been endless, and I just wanted to say Thank You for your time, your friendship and your endless cheerleading.

On a fun note... Dylan LOVES his new friend Cole (see pic below) - it was so great to see the Lindstedt's and see the babies interact - priceless. Now, we just have to be careful when they turn 16 and give us all a hard time.... "But Mom, I didn't know that I wasn't allowed to take the car to the Tiki Hut".... Christina and Ryan spoiled us rotten with food, wine, gifts, and more. Your visit, though short, was exactly what I needed. I MISS MY BBD.

To my friends from work (friends first, colleagues second!) - how wonderful it was to see you and use the "other side" of my brain for a few hours.... gracias~!

To our church - just when I think you've done more than enough...the gifts, thoughts and prayers keep coming! WOW! We can't wait to see you all again!

To those 2 people (you know who you are) that made me laugh so hard I cried over the phone this week --- ahhh, that was a breath of freshair.... :)

To my mom and Adam's mom.... your advice, wisdom, and know-how is unbelieveable. You two are saints. To my mama especially - thank you for being my bestest friend.

Hope you all have a great weekend. Dylan's Gator's won the SEC Championship - his Daddy is happy, he saw another set of grandparents, and had lots of Daddy time!

The new question is.... "What did I do before Dylan and Adam?!?!"

Dylan and Friends (we had great visitors this week!)

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5276873921276920706" style="FLOAT: left; Dylan does not have Herschsprung's Disease, which is a great thing according to the Good Doc. This means that Dylan has full nerve control in his intestine, and nothing is "dead" or "not working" so to speak. The Doctor still believes and has high hopes that the colostomy is reversible, and we will begin venturing down that road on our appt. with him on December 17 to come up with a plan.

Today has been emotional receiving those results. It's been that "thing" that just wears on you. If I could, I would switch places with Dylan in a second. My wish and prayer is for him to be a healthy, strong, young man and to be a good person at heart. I just wish I could trade places with him, take this whole experience away from him and protect him - I am his mom, and that is my job. Sometimes, I feel that I have failed him in that respect.... But, I have to grow up and realize that sometimes things just happen for a reason and make us all stronger and better for it. I must keep reminding myself of that.

On a lighter note, Dylan is up to 9lbs, 8oz, and gained 15oz in one week! What a heavyweight! DYLAN! We had a great Thanksgiving Holiday, and are so lucky to have him with us. We celebrated with my parents, sister, and our friend, Ryan from the Island - we had a great time!

Adam and I are doing well - we are adjusting to life with the lil' man, and getting used to a new schedule. So far, so good. I've been seeing what 2-3 hour feedings look like (yikes!), but I have to say - MUSC taught him well - he eats, and goes right back to sleep! YEAH!

This coming weekend we will be looking forward to seeing Grandpa Clay and Bunny, along with some of our Island friends that will be on Kiawah. We look forward to seeing you all!

Thank you to all who have continued to keep us and Dylan in their thoughts and prayers. We have received some of the most gorgeous notes, letters, and gifts. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

I hope you all had a great Holiday with your loved ones.

PS: Thank you to Tim Zielenbach (our wedding photographer and friend) for a great visit on Friday night to meet Dylan and take his "first" modeling photos.... :)

Dylan and I Today

Hi All:

It's pretty much just been D-Brinks and I today, and we've had a great afternoon! Ninah (Grandma Walker) and I gave him a sponge bath today - uhhhh- he does NOT like to be in the buff! :) And, then we had a pediatrician's appt - all went beautifully. Came home, napped, ate, and now we're working on the computer together. Dylan is so smart that he already knows how to type.

Here are some pics that I've promised to you.

Thank you again to everyone for your thoughts and prayers -they are working for all of us. Oh my goodness - he eats about every 2-3 hours, and sleeps like a rock. I want to be him when I grow up. :)

We had a bit of stressful day today; the home healthcare nurse came, and whew! I got a crash course in learning how to care for Dylan. She was a bit "rough around the edges" but meant well. I just was not prepared for her in that emotional state. We got through it, and now I am learning.

Dylan has his first pediatrician's appt. tomorrow, and a follow-up with the surgeon in about 2 weeks. Lots going on! He must bundle up!

Thank you to our church for bringing over meals this evening - how lovely and thoughtful! Also, we received some excellent Gator Gear for Dylan from our friends in Hilton Head - you all are great.

Please keep up the thoughts and prayers. Dylan came home today! It was a surprise to all of us; but, we knew it was possible - just did not want to get our hopes up. Now that I am on this new adventure, I will close early on this blog. Tomorrow, I will update with more photos, and more of the story. I just wanted you all to know that he's home, and I'm in "mama mode". Oh, yes, he and his Daddy curled up on the recliner and watched some NFL action today! :) Life is good, and we feel very lucky~

Our Saturday

Here are a few photos of Dylan from today! We had a good day - they've increased his food substantially, removed all of his IV tubes and now he's just being monitored. Rumor on the street has it that D-Brinks will be released and coming home by Tuesday or Wednesday (Monday would be a nice surprise, but I won't get my hopes up too too much!).

Also - a HUGE thank you to the Myrtle Beach Marriott for the delicious cookie basket that was on our porch when we came home. That was so sweet of you all. Thank you!

Enjoy the photos. Do not stress, I'm just venting.... I think the world caught up with me today, and I just had a "feel sorry for myself" day. It was bound to happen - just had to cry, and I did. Somewhere between cleaning the heck out of the house, driving to MUSC, and holding my baby, it just hit me like a ton of bricks. I cried into my sandwich at lunch thinking, "I feel like I am missing out on things" (bringing baby home, etc, etc), as well as just feeling emotionally exhausted, and like I have a hangover without the fun party.

So - to cure my baby blues, I stayed with Dylan all day today in the Special Care Unit with his nurses. Just a Mommy and Me Day. I got to feed him three times, burp him, rock him, and change his dirty diapers! I LOVED every minute of it. We even napped in the rocker together. :) Precious.

The doctors said that Dylan is dicating when he can leave the hospital. He must eat 50cc's before we leave. He just started eating a little over 24 hours ago, and is already up to 27cc's, so there is some optimism there. I'm praying that he doesn't go backwards.

It really was a GREAT day - I just hit a wall - look at the positives! He isn't throwing up, he's eating, he's expelling, and doing all the right things.... I just have to remember, he's new to eating and digesting like he's only a day old, rather than a week old. I need to remember to have patience and acceptance, and be there for the little man. He will be ready when he's ready!

I thank you all again. You all are wonderful. :o) You get me through my day (as does Dylan's smiles, and my terrific hubby).

Love.

SUPERMAN!

Dylan loving on his Daddy!

Thursday, 11/20/08, 9pm

What a great day yesterday was! We first met with the surgery team, and Dylan looks amazing. Dr. Hebra (his surgeon) was optimistic that as long as Dylan did the following things (not throw up after the Ropogel Cord was out, eat, keep it down, and poop), that we'd be looking at going home sometime by the end of the week. Well, he did ALL 3 of those things yesterday! Dylan is MUCH more alert and aware of his surroundings. He acts like a different baby - one that feels well, and one that wants to be awake. We received a call around midnight last night that Dylan was transferred out of the NICU at MUSC and into Special Care - he graduated! As a mom, all I can say is thank God, and WHEW! Oh, and a cartwheel with a big YAHOO! :o)

I'm hoping when we go to the hospital today that we receive good word on a date when we can expect him home!

You all have been AMAZING for support, encouragement, and sending your love. We cannot do this without you, and our thank yous are endless. We hope to repay you with hugs from Dylan.

We're hoping to have a very happy Thanksgiving this year. I give THANKS with an entirely new meaning.....

Love, The Brinker's

Post-Surgery Update

Good evening, everyone! This blog post will be short and sweet, as it's been a long day for the Brinker Family. I'd like to thank you for your prayers, well-wishes, and continued support. You have NO idea how it gets us through the day.... Adam and I have been blown away by the outpouring of support, and love.

Onto our baby -
Dylan had a very successful surgery this afternoon! The Good Doctor said that the surgery was shorter than expected (that's a great thing), as there were less (if any) complications than originally expected. Dylan was "textbook", and everything looks healthy and great and there were not any surprises! Thank God. He will begin eating tomorrow if the recovery is as expected, and we hope to have him home on Thanksgiving.

We will meet with the doctors tomorrow for the long-term plan for Dylan, but the best news is that the colostomy is most likely reverseable due to catching the stinosis early on in the first day of his life! Thank you, Janet - the nurse from St. Francis - you have changed his life for the better!

I'd also like to say thank you to the entire staff in the NICU and Special Care Unit at MUSC - what true people they are. They are patient, kind, and loving to all their babies, as well as parents. We are lucky to be in Charleston (everything happens for a reason) with such an amazing healthcare facility.

On a very personal note - this entire experience has completely changed my life, as well as Adam's. It's been very humbling for the both of us, and has created a major re-focus on our lives. Sometimes, that's what it takes.... we realize that we are truly blessed by everything around us, in us, and in our marriage. It's been strengthening. I find that our friends and families are our pillars, and that my husband is the best man on earth.

For now, goodnight - I must rest up, as I hope my son will be coming home in about a week.

Thank you again to you all. I will continue to keep you updated.

Love, Kristyn

Dylan's Surgery for Wednesday, 11/19/08 - 1:20pm MUSC

Hello everyone!

I am so glad that this blog is working for you. It helps us so much, and keeps us going from hearing from you - email, voice mail, packages, cards, flowers and the like. Thank you!

Before I begin to tell you all what is going on tomorrow, please let me thank all of you again for being our rock, and keep us "up". It gets us out of bed in the morning! And, a special thank you to those of you who we have received flowers from, cards, and gifts - thank you. You all know that I am the queen of writing thank you notes, but I may just forget, and would hate for you to know that we did not receive them. Thank you.

I have posted some new photos for you to view. They look more "scary" than they are - I didn't mean to do that to you! - but, it's not as scary as it looks. The tubes and IV's are what is feeding him, and keeping him healthy. Dylan is really Superman, undercover! His vitals are excellent, reflexes perfect, and he's just great!

Tomorrow, Dylan will undergo surgery to get his "Underground Plumbing" under control so that he can begin eating, digesting, and functioning. The pediatric staff at MUSC have decided to give Dylan a temporary colostomy so that he can begin leading his life in a healthy manner. The BIG point to nail home here is that Dylan needs to eat, so that he can grow, and his lower intestine can function (right now, it's too small to empty waste). Dylan will be in surgery tomorrow with MUSC's doctors at 1:20pm. Please pray that all goes well with anesthesia, the procedure, and recovery. Also, the 6-8 hours after surgery will prove to us that he's okay.

The doctor and staff performing the surgery have done it a million times, and have experience in reversing the surgery (we will be doing that down the line, as his intestine grows stronger). The staff told us if anyone is doing the procedure, the best is our assigned surgeon.

We are hoping, and praying, that Dylan comes home 3-7 days after surgery, as the recovery time is minimal for such an extensive procedure ---- we're so optimistic..... Once he comes home, he'll be like every other newborn keeping us up all night, eating, sleeping, pooping, and eventually giving us problems when he's drinking at 16 (ha ha!) and making out with hot chicks.

As for Adam and I - we are feeling good; tired, but well. We know that Dylan needs to eat, that he needs nurtrients, and that this is the best course of action. It's temporary, and complicated, but yet simple at the same time. We are making sure (with some help from our Mom's) that we are eating, sleeping, and resting (I forget I had a baby on Friday night!)....

We thank our parents and siblings for being there for us - cooking, cleaning, driving us, etc. Thank you. As for our friends - you're amazing. Thank you. We love you and someday we will find a way to pay you back for all of your love and support.

Please keep our little man in your hearts and thoughts the next week.... it's GO time. As Adam says, "Let's Get This Show on the Road".

Love, The Brinker Family

Biopsy done - now waiting

This is Big Daddy Adam with a quick update. Dylan had the biopsy this morning to try to pinpoint the problem in his lower GI. He had to go under general anesthesia, but woke up nicely as they put him back in bed. We talked to him and rocked him until he fell asleep again. Now we're waiting for the results to come back by Tuesday or Wednesday. He's pretty tough, and doesn't seem to let any of this bother him much; so he's content with the wait. I think he may even appreciate some low-key time without nurses and doctors messing with him as much as they have been.

As Kristyn has mentioned, we really appreciate all the good thoughts!

Sunday Night with Dylan (D-Brinks!)

We had a good night with Dylan at MUSC. His color is back, and he's really strong! Dylan had "tummy time", and I think he may just crawl right out of his little bassinet.... Yesterday, they started a feeding tube of Gatorade, and Lipids (fat and protein) for him to digest. He has great reflexes, and is getting an "A" in all areas of his life except the GI, so we're happy that all else is functioning beautifully (I'm a proud Mom already, and I am thinking Harvard!).

Adam and I rocked him to sleep last night, and will be back this morning. Today is biopsy day, and we hope to have the results back in about 24-48 hours.

Thank you all for the tremendous amount of positive energy, prayers, and beautiful words. All I ask is that you keep 'em coming! It's been an emotional, roller-coaster couple of days, but again, everyone has been so lovely. Thank you.

My email is brinker.kristyn@comcast.net, if you'd like to email me directly.

Baby Dylan

Baby Dylan James Brinker blessed our lives on Friday, November 14, 2008, at 6:01pm. He came into our world weighing in at 8lbs, 13 oz, and 20.5 inches long. We've never loved something so much in all of our lives.

We ask that all of you keep our "little man" in your thoughts and prayers right now, as we have run into a bump in the road.

Dylan started to experience GI difficulties by noon on Saturday. Our wonderful nursing staff at St. Francis in Charleston were very observant! After some tests, they thought it would be best if Dylan were transported downtown to MUSC where they have a more high level pediatric staff, should the situation worsen. They would rather transport him while he was stable, than wait for a possible emergency.

Dylan has been in the Level 2 center at MUSC since midnight/early hours of Sunday morning. Adam and Grandpa Jim went with baby, while I stayed at St. Francis until Sunday morning--hardest thing ever!

Right now, they are running a series of tests on the GI system. Adam and I have met with the neonatology team, and pediatric surgery team. Dylan is scheduled for a biopsy on Monday/Tuesday, and we hope to know more by Tuesday or Wednesday of this week on what road we're about to travel down. The doctor's are thinking that it could be something as simple as a blockage, or a couple of other possibilities that may require surgergy (we are hoping for the first one!).

On a positive note, he's beautiful, tough, and he's OURS. He smiles when we walk into the room, and loves to be held. He has a great temper, and is a lot like Adam - very "go with the flow" and "life is good". With Dylan's attitude, we know we can get through this and that all will turn out as it should.

We thank you all for keeping our son in your thoughts and prayers as this period of uncertainty, anxiety, fear, and emotions are very tough on us all.

Much Love, Kristyn, Adam and Dylan (Chopper, too)

Almost Baby's Birthday!

Hi Everyone!

Well.... today is my last official day at the office, and tomorrow is my last "off" day as I know it. My mom, sister and girlfriends threw the most wonderful baby shower the weekend of October 11 in our new home. Words simply cannot express our gratitude for their travels, company, and beautiful gifts that we have received for our little man. Thank you to all.

We have our 36.5/37 week doctor's appointment tomorrow, and I am very interested to see what Baby is doing in there. Last week, baby was getting settled into "position". Adam and I have been attending our baby classes, and have enjoyed that thoroughly - hmmmm - NOTHING is off-limits! It's funny in a way, but very scary in another way. I just want to go through labor clueless, and I think I may just be better off. The nurses and doctor's at this hopsital are just so wonderful. We are sure to have a great experience.

The more time passes, the more anxious I am becoming to meet our son.

We hope that everyone is well, and we will continue to keep you updated.

Other than baby news, we have plans for Thanksgiving in our new home, and Christmas will be spent partially in Florida with Adam's family, and then back at our new home with our baby boy and my family. We have the best of both world's this year! Lucky us!

Stay tuned for further updates!

Hmmmm....Baby coming early?!

Yesterday created a bit of excitement in our household..... had my first signs of early labor. (I will spare you the lovely details) After calling the doctor, they had asked me to come in. Baby and I are just fine, he was just a little more than active yesterday!

Now....let me back up - The entire time, all I kept thinking was, "I'm such a planner. How do I not have my bags packed, a car seat....and, oooh, it's early - he needs to keep baking a bit longer". Therefore, after our incident yesterday, I came home and packed my bags!

This baby put on quite a show for the doctor yesterday (not wanting anyone to find his heartbeat, and jumping all over the place) - sounds like he's got an attitude already! :o)

So....that's it for now. Everyone is fine; no restrictions, just going to watch me a bit closer these days! I always said, this kid will want OUT.

As a side note - I think he's going to be a BIG boy!

Grammy and Papa Walker's Gift to Baby

Thought I would post a picture of some goodies that Baby Brinker's grandparents bought for him - how cute is this?!? All is well and healthy with the little man! He's currently around the 4lbs. mark and has a great heartbeat! We're getting more and more excited each day!

Adam and I went to NC to see my family this past weekend, and we had a great time! It was my last time to travel before baby, and that was "life as we now know it" for Adam and I! Things are about to change.... :o) Mom & Dad look great, as does AJ, and we just had a wonderful weekend. Wish we all lived closer to one another.

Dylan made out like a bandit - he got his first life-size (for him) giraffe, and another baby giraffe, and some goodies for his room. It's an interesting weekend that we will have here in Charleston! Hanna (the tropical storm for those of you not in touch with The Weather Channel) has arrived to us at appx. 1:31pm this afternoon. It's pouring outside, and quite windy. It's also my big 3-oh b-day weekend. Hopefully, Adam and I can enjoy this next coming year of my life with some Spagetti-O's and candlelight. Very romantic and exciting! I was to visit with my family in Raleigh this weekend at Aj's, so we're definitely bummed to miss out. However, I am here with great health during this pregnancy, and a wonderful life.... not too much to complain about.

You always wonder when you're younger "Where will I be when I'm 30?"....it's a milestone for sure. I have a loving hubby, a baby boy on his way, a great job/career, a healthy and doting family, as well as a great home. So.... I think that's a great way to bring in 30~

But, may I embarass myself for just a moment, and remind myself of what an idiot I was in college, and my 20's....wow - did I have some "Great" moments! HA HA! Those memories keep me humble, as do my mistakes.

Let's toast to 30 - I look forward to it! I LOVE BIRTHDAYS (anyone's for that matter, just not mine), and can't wait to see what this next decade has in store.

Introducing Baby Brinker's Nursery

Adam and I have been working on Baby Brinker's Nursery, all in the spirit of getting prepared for our Baby Boy's arrival! I am now at 27.5 weeks, and have safely entered the 3rd trimester. Time certainly does fly.... All is healthy with both baby and Mom; and EVERYONE is growing! Sometimes I think that I am carrying around the next kicker for the Florida Gators, or a very large Clydesdale.... Makes me anxious to meet the little man who keeps me up at night partying!

I have attached a photo of the nursery so that you can see our theme, and what we're doing to prepare.

As for other news on the horizon.... we're off to ATL this weekend to visit Adam's brother and sister in law (who is also pregnant! We're so excited that our Baby will have a cousin!). We're both working a lot of hours at our jobs, and still settling into our new home.

We hope everyone is well, and happy!

Update on what's news....

Hello everyone!

What's new the past few weeks.... well, we have begun decorating the baby's room; it's an alphabet theme that Adam picked out for the baby. It's really cute, and if I remember, I will post a picture for you to view. We're getting very excited. I'm starting to have those "nervous" feelings of being a mom, though.... staying up late hoping that we have enough money, enough love, and all of those things that naturally come!

We've also been getting settled into our new home. It's great - anyone who's in the area is welcome to come see us!

Adam and I are traveling a lot, and hoping to see everyone before I am to not travel anymore (September 18th). We are off to Pennsylvania, Raleigh, Gainesville, and the River to see family. Should be a lot of fun.
